The story of Six Feet Under is quite simple without intricate plots. Every episode begins with the death of one life, coming to The Fishers to take the last farewell to the world on the ground. However, death always brings people comprehension. Therefore, from the beginning of every episode, we have to follow The Fishers to understand the slight difference between death and birth. Death brings shadow to the Fisher family, especially at the beginning, the Fisher family is almost a dethly quiet one. Between brothers and sisters, and between parents and children, there’s nearly no basic communication. Their own lives are also full of distrust and very chaotic — father’s little cabin, mother’s lover, two son’s chaotic private lives, daughter’s indifference to family… All of thease change with the sudden death of father Nathaniel and story goes on centering on the lives of the left four members of the Fisher family…

It’s no secret how the life of John Dillinger came to an end; so when Michael Mann begins his telling of the Dillinger story in 1933 only allowing for just over a year’s worth of story to be told he isn’t giving himself a lot of time. However, in a matter of only a few scenes Mann establishes his lead as a calculated and loyal criminal capable of breaking his friends out of jail, but unwilling to lose one along the way — that is unless you are the man upon which Dillinger places blame. Here is our hero, or anti-hero as it is, and Johnny Depp plays him with an accomplished steely gaze. It’s a low-key performance surrounded by menace, desire and love, but at the same time this film won’t be for everyone as its slow pace and attention to detail are sure to bore many while enthralling others.

Public Enemies is based on the Bryan Burrough’s book of the same name and while filled with prison breaks, bank heists and a recreation of the shootout at Little Bohemia Lodge that rivals the classic gun battle Mann staged in the streets of downtown Los Angeles in Heat, this film is hardly an action epic. This film is a classical epic. It’s a period piece in every sense of the word, so much so the final moments while we watch Dillinger sit in the Biograph theater taking in Manhattan Melodrama the only difference between the classic Clark Gable and William Powell feature is that it is in black-and-white while Public Enemies is drenched in high-definition color.

I would best describe this film as following a similar structure to Mann’s Heat, while carrying the pacing of David Fincher’s Zodiac. Public Enemies contains plenty of gunfire, but action is not on sale here as much as Mann is determined to dig into Dillinger and what makes him tick, even though it appears it may be an impossible task.

At one point Dillinger introduces himself to his soon-to-be love interest, Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard), and tells her, “I rob banks.” She is startled by the statement, and rightly so, but that’s just who he is and he isn’t one for dancing around the facts. Dillinger’s a bank robber living in the now with no thought of tomorrow, and that’s just the way he likes it.

Of course, things change as J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) commissions famous law man Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) to take charge of the FBI’s Chicago office and begin the manhunt for Dillinger. Bale plays Purvis with a dogged dedication to his job, a dedication that appears to overwhelm him at times, yet his ability to assess a situation never seems compromised. Both Bale and Depp are extraordinary in their performances, but in such a way that neither ever takes it too far, and both thankfully stay clear of old-fashioned gangster stereotypes.

Depp never goes for the gangster role made popular by 1930s Hollywood and Bale doesn’t take his character’s dedication to catching Dillinger so far it becomes overcooked, something we certainly saw Bale do in Terminator Salvation. However, while Bale and Depp deliver, the true showstopper is Marion Cotillard playing Billie, a hatcheck girl that catches Dillinger’s eye and understandably he never wants to take it off her.

As much as Public Enemies is a film about a man who robs banks it is also about a man who seems to be on the verge of realizing there is more to life, but never quite gets a handle on it and it actually begins early on. A “staring into the eyes of death” theme seems to run through this film from start to finish as Dillinger deals with it in the film’s opening scene and Purvis encounters it throughout, in what seems like a calculated attempt by Mann to link the two foes.

Dillinger’s forward-thinking continues in his relationship (if you can call it that) with Billie, neither of them having any real direction in life, and the combination of her naivete and his dedication create an interesting, although not fully satisfying, pairing. As Billie, Cotillard is absolutely ravishing. Mann gives her wide-eyes and soft skin the treatment of a Hollywood goddess and she chews up every scene, but the beauty of this film doesn’t stop there.

Considering the release date and star power of Public Enemies you would think this was a summer tentpole feature, but to call it anything other than an art house period piece would be to mislabel it. Along with cinematographer Dante Spinotti, Mann manages to make the 1930s look like a version of the ’30s the cinema has never shown you before. Through the use of high-definition cameras Mann actually brings the ’30s into the Oughts and the realism may set some back on their heels. It’s a striking visual presentation and it makes the scenery as much a part of the movie as the actors living in it.

With all of this said you would expect me to come away with a final paragraph slathering additional adjectives to describe the emotions I came out of the film with. However, this wasn’t an easy film for me to digest and it is one I will be returning to during its opening weekend as I was upset there wasn’t a second screening I could attend before writing this review.

Mann’s dedication to Dillinger’s lack of foresight throws me for a loop as it sometimes stalls the progress of the film, but I believe that was the point. Dillinger robs banks. That’s what he does and there isn’t much more he is looking for. He’s a loyal, yet ruthless, character filled with hatred, but his hatred isn’t for the people, it’s for the institutions. While robbing a bank Depp uses a similar line to one heard in Heat, “We’re not here for your money sir, we’re here for the bank’s money.” There is a method to his lawlessness and it earned him some level of respect with the public, but doesn’t make for a narrative that’s easy to instantly embrace. I am leaving room for this one to grow on me or slowly settle down to the middle, but one thing’s for certain, it had my wheels spinning and may likely end up an all-time classic of mine a few years down the line.

If you’re a fan of Halloween like me (and the season in general), I’ve combined a list of movies guaranteed to give you a taste of the holiday. Some of these choices are scary, while others are bound to get you in the mood with their Halloween atmosphere! In the coming month, these movies and specials are bound to be found somewhere on Dish Network’s channels.

1)) Halloween (1978)– the ultimate Halloween movie in my opinion. The suspense is slow-building and chilling, though in the end, the simplicity of the movie is what makes it work. What’s scarier than a man in a mask without a motive? The sequels created a backstory, but in the original Michael Myers was intended to be nothing more than a psycho killer stalking babysitters. The unknown is always scarier than the exposition.

2) Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)- this is one of the better Halloween sequels, and one of the few to get the atmosphere of the holiday right. This is not a perfect movie, but there are enough elements (the acting from a very young Danielle Harris for one, plus the feel of the holiday) that make it enough for me to enjoy watching every year. ‘Tis the season!

3) “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (1966) – I’ve probably lost count on how many times I’ve seen this. When I was a kid we had it on tape but we still got excited every year when they aired it on TV. Those were back in the days when the networks actually showed holiday specials. I don’t know why they stopped, but I’m going to guess the availability of the programs on DVD has something to do with it. “Charlie Brown” is one of the few they still show, however.

4) “Garfield’s Halloween Adventure “(1989)- easily my favorite of the Halloween fare. I bought this on DVD a couple of years ago (along with Garfield’s other holiday specials) and every year around Halloween I pop it in the DVD player. Considering they no longer show this on TV for some reason, it’s a nice trip down memory lane.

5) Hocus Pocus (1993)- most of this movie was filmed and set in Salem, MA – the ultimate Halloween destination – which explains the spot-on atmosphere. It definitely has a strong feeling of fall/Halloween in New England, which you can only truly appreciate if you’ve grown up around here. It’s a family movie, and I remember going to see this one at the drive-in. ABC Family and Disney air this a lot around this time of year.

6) Casper (1995)- another one that captures the feeling of fall in New England just right (I think this is supposed to take place in Maine.) Again, it’s geared towards the younger ones and families, but its still good atmosphere-wise.

7) Satan’s Little Helper (2004)- I threw this one in here simply for the sheer camp value. This low-budget flick came out in 2004. It involves a young boy who is obsessed with a video game called Satan’s Little Helper. While walking down the street he sees a man in a Satanic mask displaying some dead bodies on a lawn (they’re real but the boy thinks they’re fake.) He asks if he can be his helper and he follows the masked man around town on a killing spree, completely oblivious to the fact that these horrible acts are all real. Gather a few of your friends together, get drunk, and have a “Mystery Science Theatre” night with this one. The acting is terrible, the dialogue is even worse, and it definitely puts this one into the “So bad it’s good” category.8) Trick ‘r Treat (2009) – despite not having seen this one yet (it hits DVD October 6), I still added this to the list because everyone who has seen it already is gushing over the atmosphere in the movie. They say it might possibly be one of the best Halloween movies ever to be released, and that it completely embraces the spirit of the holiday. I have a feeling this movie will be a cult classic (in some ways it already is – it has been delayed since 2007), and I will definitely be adding this to my movie collection.

I had a chance to go to the movies over the weekend. It was so difficult to settle on just one film with so many great choices. I originally intended to finally watch The White Ribbon. The anticipation was building ever since I read a great review online and saw a preview for the movie. I then realized that it is nominated for an Oscar for Cinematography, not to mention that it already won the Palm D’or, the highest honor at the Cannes Film Festival. The White Ribbon also won more awards and looks absolutely creepy and original- two attributes that will always spark my interest. I was disappointed when I checked the movie times and realized that it was not showing in the two theaters that are near my house! I asked the ticket sales staff at the theater when the film came out of the theater and they had never heard of it! Now that I know this film is a rare treasur, I want to see it even more. I certainly hope I don’t have to wait until it is released on video because you know that they’ll show half of the movie at the Oscars when they announce the nomination!

I was torn between The Lovely Bones, Precious and The Edge of Darkness with Mel Gibson. I chose Precious because I had to see the performances that have been described as phenomenal by the press. This is the first time that we’ve seen the rising star Sabourey Sidibe who did a great job her first time around. Her character was abused in many ways by her mother and father and was a pregnant teenager who already had a daughter that was in the custody of her grandmother. Her mother was played my Mo’Nique who many people know from her television shows but I bet no one knew what an amazing actress she is. I was more taken aback by her performance than anyone else’s. The way this woman cries out loud in the film will make anyone cry. It is so real that it’s utterly breathtaking. She certainly deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Mariah Carey’s character is the social worker who has a very short role in the film but she made it a quality role and seemed very invested in delivering nothing but her best acting. I must say that I was surprised at how good her acting really was and I am looking forward to seeing more of her on the big screen. I give her kudos for going on film without makeup. As a person who doesn’t even venture to the corner store without makeup, I’m sure it had to be a difficult choice.

We know that the acting is great but what about the story? I had an uneasy feeling in the beginning of the movie that there would be a few slices of inappropriate humor here and there and the directing looked a little shaky at first. The movie seemed to get better as it went along. The directing became more effective, the acting grew stronger and the plot got a little freakier. This is not a date movie by any means, as a matter of fact; it will turn your stomach for the most part. Watching Precious is like seeing a bad accident that is documented so well that you have to watch it out of sheer curiosity. I don’t know if I would call this film entertaining but I would certainly say that it was well done. The story was depicted in its raw form and was not sugar coated in any way. I appreciate it for what it is but I know I wouldn’t watch it a second time.

I look forward to seeing Shutter Island the second I can grab grandma to baby-sit because this movie looks like a guaranteed blast! I can’t believe Scorcese is taking a crack at horror! I’m so curious to see what happens in this film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. I watched a long trailer for the movie when I went to see Precious and I was quite impressed. This horror/drama/adventure film looks like one heck of a ride, Scorcese style. I’ll be watching some great movies in the meantime during the week on the Dish Network premium channels.
